Elisha was a prophet who took over from Prophet Elijah, which means he spoke for God. He did miraculous things like parting a river, making bad water pure, and bringing a boy back to life! Elisha’s life teaches us much about listening to God, being brave, and trusting in God’s power.
Through his life, we can learn how to accept God’s call upon our lives and be a faithful servant. Elisha’s story shows us that God can use anyone, even us, to do amazing things.
He wants us to be brave and believe in Him. In this post, I will share with you 15 Lessons learned from Prophet Elisha’s life for us to make use of as believers.

What Can We Learn From Elisha?
As believers, what can we learn from Elisha? We can learn to follow God, to ask God for what we desire, the need to serve others, the value of mentorship, and the power of faith. Elisha teaches us that an ordinary life devoted to God can accomplish extraordinary things.
What Can We Learn From The Story Of Elijah And Elisha?
In the Bible, there are many stories about people God used in extraordinary ways. One of those stories is about two prophets named Elijah and Elisha.
Prophets were like God’s special messengers, bringing important words to the people.
So, what can we learn from the story of Elijah and Elisha? We can learn about the importance of listening to God, having courage even when things are hard, being faithful and trusting God’s plan, and helping others.
Elisha wanted to continue God’s work, so he asked to follow Elijah and learn. Even when things seemed impossible, Elisha trusted that God would be with him and guide him. We should do the same with what we have.
What Can We Learn From Prophet Elijah?
What can we learn from Prophet Elijah? We can learn from Prophet Elijah to always trust in God, remain faithful to our callings, be different and follow God even when things seem difficult.
Elijah relied on God throughout his life for guidance, instructions and provisions. When he was hiding in the desert and didn’t have enough food or water, God took care of him and sent birds to bring him food.
We can also learn to be brave and stand up for our beliefs. Elijah wasn’t afraid to speak out, even though the kings and queens didn’t like what he had to say. He knew God was on his side, and that gave him courage
Lessons To Learn From Elijah And Elisha
Elijah and Elisha are two great prophets in the Bible, each with different stories and lessons to teach us. Here are some lessons to learn from Elijah and Elisha:
1. God hears our prayers. When Elijah prayed for rain during a terrible drought, God sent it
2. God provides for us. In the desert, ravens brought food to Elijah. Even in hard times, God takes care of those who trust Him.
3. We should be obedient to God. Elisha immediately left his home and followed Elijah when God called him, showing that obeying God is important, even when He asks us to do something strange
4. It’s okay to feel discouraged, but don’t give up. Elijah got so tired that he wanted to give up. God rested him and gave him strength to continue, showing us that it’s normal to feel down sometimes, but God helps us get back up.
5. Be willing to help others. Elisha helped many people in need. God wants us to have kind hearts and lend a hand to those around us.
6. Our job is to pass on what we learn to others. Elijah trained Elisha to become the next prophet. We should share what we learn from God to help others grow in their faith.
Do you want to learn from this prophet? Here are 15 Lessons learned from Prophet Elisha in the bible
1. Learn To Follow God All The Way
One of the lessons learned from Prophet Elisha is that we should learn to follow God all the way. When we look at the life of Elisha, we see a man completely devoted to God and His calling.
His life teaches us more about perseverance, obedience, and the rewards that come with total surrender. When God calls us, there’s no turning back. Elisha’s journey with God started when Elijah called him (1 Kings 19:19-21).
Elisha was a farmer, but he left everything – his fields and his family to answer God’s call. Elisha was set apart for God’s service.
Elisha could have said no, but he didn’t. He made a bold decision – he burned his ploughs, ending his farming lifestyle. Elisha didn’t just start following God.
He followed Elijah faithfully, serving his mentor diligently. When it was time for Elijah to be taken into heaven, Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit.
That bold request shows his commitment to God’s work (2 Kings 2:9). If we want to experience the fullness of God’s power in our lives, we need this kind of hunger.
Just like Elisha burned his bridges, we, too, must decide. There’s no room for lukewarmness when it comes to following God. Surround yourself with fellow believers to sharpen your spiritual life and receive counsel from mentors who will push you closer to God.
2. Know How To Listen To God
One of the lessons learned from Prophet Elisha in the bible is that we should know how to listen to God.
During those times of Elisha, there were no visions, revelation, or Holy Spirit intervention, just the scroll to read and the prophets to consult to know God’s mind. Imagine how hard it must be to make important decisions in those situations.
But Elisha had a secret: he knew how to hear God. There’s a time in the Bible (2 Kings 3) when Elisha was in the middle of a crisis.
They were preparing for battle. You’d think he called upon fire to consume their enemies, But he requested a musician and worshipped God. He knew the demands for their victory, and he tapped into the spirit realm to listen to God.
Elisha faced armies, healed the sick, and even knew what enemy kings were plotting in secret (see 2 Kings 6). How did he tap into that kind of wisdom? It was through his ability to listen to that still small voice inside.
Elisha didn’t just listen to God with his ears; he listened by watching and doing what Elijah guided. Faith without action is dead. If you want to hear God more clearly, you need to take action on the things you do hear.
3. Be A Faithful Servant To Your God
As believers, we all get to that point when our faith is tested, and it can feel like we should give up our faith. But we know that those who serve God, even when it’s hard, will be rewarded greatly.
One of the lessons learned from Prophet Elisha is that we should be a faithful servant to our God. Elisha’s story teaches us the importance of staying committed to God, regardless of our challenges.
Elisha was just a regular farmer when Elijah called him to a life of service. Can you imagine the surprise he had then? Elisha immediately left everything, his family, land, and livelihood – to follow Elijah.
Throughout his time serving Elijah and later as a prophet of God, Elisha faced difficulties. He wasn’t immune to doubt or fear. Yet, he stayed the course. He became known for the miracles he performed.
He didn’t give up when it was hard, and God blessed him. Faithfulness is not only known in bigger tasks. Elisha was faithful in small tasks, too.
He saw the needs of those around him and used the gifts God had given him to help; that’s what a faithful servant of God does. We can do the same with what we have.
4. Make The Most Of What You Have
One of the lessons learned from Prophet Elisha is that we should make the most of what we have. Elisha was a man who understood how God created this work in His kingdom
. For example, there was a widow who was in debt. Her creditors were threatening to take away her sons as enslaved people. In desperation, she sought out Elisha.
He asked her a simple question: “What do you have in your house?” Her response was despairing: “Nothing, except a pot of oil.”
Yet, Elisha saw potential in that small resource. With God’s blessing, the oil multiplied, filling all the vessels the widow could find. She could sell the oil, pay off her debts, and save her sons.
This teaches us two important things: God works with what we have. He doesn’t wait until we think we’re qualified or have all our ducks in a row. He takes our small offering and can multiply it with His power.
There’s always something to offer. Even if you feel like you have nothing, look around you. It might feel small or insignificant, but God can multiply it if you bring it to Him.
So, ask yourself, “What do I have?” Don’t compare yourself to others or focus on what you lack. Identify those talents, resources, and opportunities that are within your reach. Then, decide to place them in God’s hands. You will be amazed at what He can do.
5. Don’t Be A Greedy Person
The Bible has much to say about greed, and the story of Elisha’s servant, Gehazi, says a lot about greed. Gehazi worked for Elisha. This prophet could heal people and perform all sorts of miracles.
One day, a foreign general named Naaman was cured of a terrible skin disease through Elisha. To express his thanks, Naaman wanted to give Elisha loads of gifts. But guess what? Elisha didn’t want anything.
He knew his powers came from God, and he wasn’t about to sell that. But Gehazi had other plans. After Naaman left, Gehazi chased after him with a big lie. He tricked Naaman into giving him the stuff that Elisha had refused.
Elisha found out what Gehazi had done because God showed him. Gehazi got greedy and tried to get rich quickly. In the end, he lost everything, including his health.
Greed makes us do things that we would never do. It makes us lie, cheat, and steal. Greed clouds our judgment and can make us forget who we are and what matters in life.
It can ruin relationships, reputations, and our relationship with God, just like it did to Gehazi. Instead of being greedy, we should be content with what we have.
We should focus on giving to others, not getting from them. Because our riches come from our relationship with God, not from how much stuff we can pile up.
If you’re struggling with greed, start by praying about it. Ask God to change your heart and help you see that your true treasure is found in Him
6. Stay True To God’s Calling Upon You
One of the lessons learned from Prophet Elisha is that we should stay true to God’s calling upon us, no matter what that may look like.
Elisha may have felt he was not ready, but he didn’t let that stop him. God doesn’t always call the most qualified people. Often, He calls those willing to accept the call, no matter how inadequate they feel.
Maybe you don’t see yourself as a preacher or a missionary, but God is calling you to something bigger than you.
Elisha could have stayed on his farm, but he was willing to say yes to a tough task without knowing the full details of the assignment he was called to do. Now, you might not be called to be a prophet.
But every one of us has been given an assignment by God. It could be in your career, family, as a volunteer, or in your church community. Whatever it is, be willing to sacrifice your time, other interests, or things you love for it.
7. Be Humble, And Don’t Brag About Yourself
Have you ever noticed someone brag about all the things they’ve done? Maybe it makes you feel jealous or irritated. God gives us gifts and opportunities so we can serve Him and others, not boast about how great we are.
When we focus on God, we stay humble and allow Him to take all the glory and credit. One of the lessons learned from Prophet Elisha is that we should be humble and not brag about ourselves. Elisha was a mighty prophet of God.
He did great miracles – healed people and brought a boy back to life. You’d think that after doing all those things, he might start being full of himself. But Elisha didn’t do those things for his glory; he did them to show God’s power.
God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble. This means He fights against those with egos, but He’s always there for those who know they need His help. Next time you’re tempted to brag, give God the glory and let Him work through you
8. Forgive Others When They Hurt You
Have you ever had someone do something so hurtful that the anger just bubbled up inside of you? I know I have. There have been times when it felt like forgiving someone who hurt me would be impossible.
But one of the lessons learned from Prophet Elisha is that we should forgive others when they hurt us.
Elisha was a powerful prophet of God, But like any of us, he faced opposition. When he was coming back from his journey with his master, some young men mocked Elisha as he travelled along.
They ridiculed his appearance. Can you imagine how that might make you feel? Instead of ignoring them or letting the anger go away. Elisha pronounced a curse.
Immediately, two bears attacked the group and killed them. He allowed his anger to destroy others. When someone wrongs us, we naturally seek revenge or hold onto bitterness. But Jesus taught us to turn the other cheek and love our enemies. Let those who have hurt you go, forgive them and hand their judgment to God.
9. Be Flexible And Adapt To Changes
One of the lessons learned from Prophet Elisha is that we should be flexible and adapt to changes. Change is the one constant thing in our lives. Elisha was just an ordinary farmer when Elijah called him to be a prophet.
He had to leave everything – his home, his job, his family – to follow God’s plan. Elisha didn’t hold onto the past. He accepted his new calling and became a powerful voice for God. Sometimes, God calls us to make big changes in our lives, just like Elisha.
Other times, the changes are smaller. But whether big or small, change is inevitable. The key is to be flexible, just like water. Water shapes itself to fit any container.
In the same way, we need to adapt to the changes that come our way. Let go of rigid expectations. Things don’t always turn out the way we plan.
Be willing to adjust your plans and expectations when circumstances change. See change as an opportunity. Instead of focusing on what you’re losing, think about what you might gain from a change.
10. Lead By Example And Inspire Others With Your Actions
One of the lessons learned from Prophet Elisha is that we should lead by example and inspire others with our actions. Your actions speak louder than your words ever could.
Elisha wasn’t the kind of guy who just sat back and told others how to live. No, he showed them. Look at his experience with the widow.
She was broke and worried her sons would be taken as slaves. Elisha didn’t just offer some comforting words – he took charge. He told her to gather every empty jar and then miraculously fill it with enough oil to solve her problems.
If you tell everyone about the importance of forgiveness but secretly hold grudges, what’s the real message you’re sending? When your life reflects the teachings of Jesus – when you love others generously, choose integrity over convenience, and offer grace when things get complicated – that’s when people take notice.
So, how can you lead by example? You can go out of your way to be kind to someone having a rough day. Or take action on a project you’ve been putting off.
Whatever it is, choose an action that reflects the Jesus you love and the positive change you want to see in the world.
11. Respect Your Elders And Learn From Their Wisdom
One of the lessons learned from Prophet Elisha is that you should respect your elders and learn from their wisdom. Elisha knew the value of a good mentor, someone with years of experience.
So, when the time came for Elijah to be taken up into heaven, Elisha asked for a double portion of his mentor’s spirit. You may ask why he requested a “double portion”?
In ancient times, the oldest son in a family got a double portion of the inheritance. Elisha was saying, “I respect Elijah so much. I want to continue his legacy as if I were his son.”
Those who have walked the path before you have a wealth of wisdom. It might be your grandparents, a seasoned pastor, or a teacher who saw your potential.
Your elders, whoever they may be in your life, want to invest in you. They’ve faced struggles, made mistakes, and learned through experience. Respect them so you can tap into their knowledge. You might pick up some wisdom of your own along the way.
12. Stick To What You Believe Is Right
One of the lessons learned from Prophet Elisha is that you should stick to what you believe is right, even when it’s difficult. Elisha was a man who knew what God had called him to do, and opinions or circumstances didn’t easily sway him.
Sometimes, the people trying to push you away from God’s will are well-meaning. They want to protect you or maybe avoid hard things themselves.
But you have to make a critical decision in those moments. Will you listen to the voice in your heart that you know is God, or go with the crowd? Sticking to what you believe is right takes courage.
Standing up for what you believe in will sometimes set you apart, and that’s normal because the right path is the hardest. But like Elisha, if you stick to your beliefs, you will honour God and do what’s best for yourself in the long run.
13. Be Patient And Trust In Divine Timing
One of the lessons learned from Prophet Elisha is that you should be patient and trust in divine timing. God has a better plan than anything you could come up with yourself.
When you try to force things to happen, you will destroy many things. Elisha wasn’t an overnight success story.
He served his mentor, Elijah, for years. He saw Elijah do miracles, but it took a long time for him to see his breakthrough. Sometimes, we must wait to see God’s best in store.
There could be things behind the scenes that need to happen before His promises can be fulfilled in your life. Maybe you’re being prepared for that big thing you keep asking for.
God’s timing is different from ours, and it’s always perfect if only we can wait and be patient.
14. Don’t Die With What You Have
One of the lessons learned from Prophet Elisha is that you should not die with what you have. Sometimes, we can be so selfish with the grace God has given us.
We think the skills, talents, and abilities we have are only for us to enjoy. But that’s just not true. What you have is not given to you to take with you to the grave.
It’s not about you. Imagine if Elisha had kept farming and didn’t ask for a double portion of the anointing. He would have missed his destiny and all the lives he was meant to touch. We’d never even know his name.
If you’re hiding your gifts, worried about what people think, or even too busy with other things, people won’t get the blessings they’re supposed to get through you.
Don’t die with what you have. Find a way to serve others using what God has placed inside you.
15. Leave Behind A Good Legacy
Have you ever considered what you want to be remembered for when you’re gone? Not just by your family, but by everyone who knew you? Every day, you get to write your story.
It’s written in your words, actions, and how you show up for others. One of the lessons learned from Prophet Elisha is that you should leave behind a good legacy.
Elisha served God with all his heart. Even when it seemed like no one was watching, he chose to do the right thing. His life made a difference for so many people.
Wouldn’t you like to make that kind of impact, too? It’s not about being perfect or changing the whole world.
It’s about living intentionally and leaving behind something good that people can’t ever forget so you can be remembered for the love, kindness, and service you shared. That’s a legacy that lasts.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Elisha’s story is not just about the power of God but about how we can be conduits of that power.
Are we, like Elisha, sensitive to the needs of others? Are we ready to speak the truth, even under challenging circumstances?
Let’s apply these lessons in our lives and see how God will transform our lives into a living testimony
Save this for later!
