How To Stop Worrying And Start Trusting God

Sharing is caring!

Are you a person easily given to worrying? Unfortunately, a lot of people are. This article will cover ten simple ways on how to stop worrying and start trusting God.

Worrying is destructive and unproductive. It fills you with dread, stealing joy and peace from your heart and mind, but it doesn’t change anything or fix any problems. Trusting God, however, can give you joy and peace regardless of your situation or circumstances.

Worrying can be detrimental to our physical and mental health. Still, many of us are habitual worriers and find it challenging to stop worrying, even when we know it’s causing us stress and taking us away from the present moment.

The good news is that you can learn how to stop worrying and start trusting God, starting now. God doesn’t want you to worry. As a believer, understand that God is always in control. So why worry when God is in control?. However this can be hard when things don’t go your way or when life seems unpredictable and scary.

But nevertheless, God wants us to have a worry-free life! So let’s take a look at ten ways on how to stop worrying and start trusting God.

1.  Surrender Your Worries To God

There are times in life when we find ourselves overcome with anxiety. Sometimes it seems like worrying is the only thing to do.

However, there are many things you can do rather than be swallowed by anxiety. One of the ways on how to stop worrying and start trusting God is to surrender your worries to God.

It is easier to surrender than to carry the heavy hold that anxiety provides. Anxiety will weigh you down. So surrender your worries to God and you will find strength.

The word of God in 1 Peter 5 from verses 6 and 7 says, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.

Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you” There it is, surrender to God and send your anxiety to Him.

How do you give all your worries to God? Talk to Him. You must first tell Him; it’s a conscious decision. You have to give the Lord access and permission to come and free you of any burden.

I remember growing up as a child. There was a hymn we would usually sing in church. It was one of my favourites.

It is ‘I surrender’ written by American art teacher and musician Judson W. Van DeVenter (1855–1939), who became a music minister and evangelist.

It was later put to music by Winfield S. Weeden (1847–1908) and published in 1896. The lyrics of the chorus read, “I surrender all, I surrender all, All to Thee, My blessed Savior I surrender all.”

This song always reminds me of the truth that we can surrender all to Jesus. The Bible tells us that Jesus is willing to help us when we ask Him to.

Matthew 11:28 – 29 says, “Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (NLT)

Jeremiah 31:25 also tells us, “for I will refresh the weary soul and replenish all who are weak.” God wants you to find rest. As a matter of fact, God is rest.

To enjoy rest, you have to ask Him to take away everything that may be causing you to worry. So give your worries to God and go to sleep because it is only in God you can truly find rest.

2.  Meditate On God’s Word

The Bible is a treasured possession, supplying light for every step we take. It gives us freedom from fear and a sense of security.

We can find joy in the Bible when everything else seems dark; it is full of hope for tomorrow. So one of the best ways on how to stop worrying and start trusting God is by meditating on scripture.

Meditating on scripture passages helps calm our minds, release tension and invite peace into our lives.

Whether we read the words aloud or quietly, studying scripture reveals truths about who God is and what He desires for us. When we study His word, worry loses its power over us. For Christians, reading the Bible daily is essential for gaining truth and growing spiritually.

The Lord Jesus said in Matthew 4:4, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.”

As believers, we are expected to read God’s words in the Bible frequently and hold them firmly in our hearts.

When we do this, it enhances our spiritual experiences. The process of keeping God’s words in our hearts is meditation.

Therefore, the purpose of meditation is to think deeply about what God has said to us in scripture and prepare our minds and hearts for prayer. Scripture fuels meditation, while meditation fuels prayer.

The Bible in Psalm outlines ways on how to overcome worry biblically. It gives at least five steps for meditating on God’s Word. We meditate to focus, understand, remember, worship, and apply. Psalm 119: 15 says, “I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.”

No matter when we read our Bibles, whether over lunch or before bed, our schedules and responsibilities tend to distract us. Distractions are a tool used by Satan to keep us from hearing God’s Word.

Therefore this scripture encourages us to fix our eyes on God’s ways. Meditation frees us from distracting thoughts, even for a few minutes, by looking at Jesus and focusing on scripture as we read and pray.

Secondly, in Psalm 119:27, the Bible says, “Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works.”

Medication allows us to understand how God speaks about Himself, our world, and our hearts. And we can always begin this by praying like the psalmist, “Make me understand your way!”.

Thirdly, Psalm 143:5 says, “I remember the days of old; I meditate on all that you have done; I ponder the work of your hands.” So in meditation, we think deeply about the work of God’s hands. And when we do, we see how insignificant our problems are before God.

3.  Refuse To Fear

There is a direct correlation between fear and worry. Often people become worried about what they are fearful of. This is why one of the ways on how to stop worrying and start trusting God is to say no to fear.

2 Timothy 1:7 tells us, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

As believers, it is important we agree with God through His Word. In the above scripture, the Bible lets us know that God has not given us the Spirit of fear but of love, power, and a sound mind. This lets us know that fear is an outside force.

So, whenever fear attacks you, tell yourself, “I refuse to fear.” Refuse to yield to the reflexes of fear, for greater is He that’s in you than He that’s in the world (1 John 4:4).

Fear is not of God and a great tool of the Devil to keep us under the bondage of constant worrying. As a believer, God is always with you and in you.

Isaiah 41:10 tells us, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” There’s nothing in this world that can destroy you, as the greater One lives in you.

There’s no demon hatched out of hell that can harm you. Why? Jesus said nothing shall by any means hurt you (Luke 10:19).

That means there’s absolutely nothing that has been created with the ability to destroy you; be they men or demons; living or non-living things; you have overcome them all!

Studying the Bible carefully, you will discover that when angels appeared with a message from God, they usually said, “fear not.” This is because as humans, it is easy to give in to fear.

Don’t be afraid of situations that seem beyond your control or may be difficult for you. They may be beyond your control but not beyond God’s control.

The Bible says no weapon formed against you shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17). When we refuse to fear, we free ourselves from the traps of the enemy, give room to stop worrying, and start trusting God.

4.  Follow His Leading

It’s so easy to worry. It feels like we’re doing something productive, but when you stop and think about it, all worrying has done is make us tired, depressed, stressed out, and distracted. We worry about the things that could happen.

We worry about the people who have hurt us in the past. We worry because we don’t know what tomorrow will bring.

But what if we stopped worrying? What if we started trusting God? What if we followed His leading?

When we are faced with difficult situations, God doesn’t leave us clueless. He does this to help us come out stronger and better. This is why one of the ways on how to stop worrying and start trusting God is to follow His leading.

When we begin to follow His leading, our focus changes from ourselves to Him. When our focus shifts away from ourselves, worry fades away.

Trusting Him means putting your life into His hands even though you can’t see the whole picture. If you’re struggling with worry or feeling like you’re always worried about something, then it’s time for a change. The truth is that we can’t control everything in life, but we can follow God’s lead.

Jesus said I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly (John 10:10).

This means joy. Joy in every area of our lives. We don’t need to worry because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). No matter what happens, He’ll be right there beside us. So the best thing we can do is trust Him completely because He does know what’s best for us!

5.  Keep Yourself Busy

Are you being caught up worrying too much? Another way on how to stop worrying and start trusting God is to get busy!

This is because idleness can allow us to see things wrongly, and this can lead us to worry.

So keep yourself busy! Sometimes the most effective way to stop worrying is by keeping yourself busy with tasks that will distract you from your worries.

For example, if you are worried about not making enough money at work, try focusing on other aspects of your life like spending time with friends, exercising or reading a good book.

You can also turn your thoughts into action by setting up small chores that will take up little time. For example, try cleaning around your house, organizing a closet, or drawing.

Keeping busy with activities that are not connected to your worry can often help distract you from it while helping you feel more accomplished in your day.

Another benefit of keeping yourself busy is that after some time passes, you’ll be able to look back and see just how much work you have managed to accomplish instead of dwelling on worries. You can also focus on giving back in your community.

Volunteering is a great way to take your mind off personal worries while still providing you with other people’s needs. Thinking about all of those less fortunate than you can help put things into perspective.

So instead of focusing on what you don’t have, try appreciating what you do have in your life, even if it may be small and insignificant compared to others.

6.  Let Go Of The Past

Many people wonder how they can stop feeling pain related to a hurtful past. You might think that your current feelings of pain will last forever as they were pains tied to past experiences that block our future.

Letting go of things is so difficult. It is easy to keep trying to hold on to things, but we must have faith that God has something better for us.

Giving up something that we’ve put so much energy into, like letting go of a relationship, has less of an impact if we realize that it’s not our responsibility because God has a better plan.

This is why another way on how to stop worrying and start trusting God is to let go of and allow God to take control.

Many times we find ourselves worrying about a lot of things. My advice is to stop! Stop worrying about what has already happened. What’s done is done, so focus on what you can change.

Stop worrying about the future. There are no guarantees that anything will go as planned, so relax and enjoy your time now instead of stressing about what could happen.

Stop worrying about other people. They don’t have the same perspective as you, so their opinion is not worth stressing over or losing sleep over.

Stop dwelling on how things could have been different if you had done something differently in the past. Dwelling on these thoughts will only make you feel worse because there’s nothing you can do now to change it.

So stop worrying and let go. It is all in the past now. Dwelling on these thoughts will only make you feel worse because there’s nothing you can do now to change it. All you can do is learn from this experience and move forward.

7.  Have Faith In Your Future

Things will not always go as planned for us. Sometimes this is a way God ensures we are in sync with His plan and purposes for our lives.

One way on how to stop worrying and start trusting God is to have faith in your future.

No matter your stage in life, it’s important to have faith in your future. When we don’t believe God has a plan for us, we will try to take control of our own lives. This usually leads to anxiety, self-will and stubbornness.

When we have faith in our future, it protects our minds from being under the bondage of fear and worry.

The psalmist shows us this in Psalm 31:14-15. It says, “But I am trusting you, O LORD, saying, “You are my God!” [15] My future is in your hands.” (NLT)

Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us about the safety of our future. It says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

When you know that your future is secured it terminates any worry. It boosts confidence and births hope.

The scriptures tell us in Hebrews 11:1 that “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

Faith is the confidence in what you hope for, the conviction about what you do not see.

So although things may be happening contrary to what you desire, you have confidence that things will change for the better.

So rather than allow worry to rob us of our peace, we can have faith in our future.

8.  Rely On His Strength

For me, the best way on how to stop worrying and start trusting God is to rely on His strength.

I have come to understand that there are so many things I may never be able to do or control. I have come to see my limitations right before me and how weak I am as a human.

This is why I rely on Him. He gives me peace that is beyond understanding in moments where I had faced challenges I thought were bigger than me.

Psalm 28:7 says, “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise Him”

As believers, we are not called to rely on our own strength. No matter how big an obstacle in front of us may seem, we can overcome it if we rely on God’s power.

In addition, God’s strength acts as a shield from feelings of anxiety we may experience. When we fully put our trust in Him, He walks alongside us.

Whenever worry and doubt begin to set in, we can turn to Hebrews 4:16, which says,

“Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

Even when we feel incompetent, we can find confidence in knowing that when we call upon the Lord, He will help us. Rather than being confident in our own abilities, we can be confident in God’s abilities.

9.  Remember He Cares For You

God cares for you more than anyone else does. He has a good plan for your life and for you. The Bible tells us in Romans 8:28, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.”

It’s important to remember when things get hard or when we face challenges, that everything is going according to plan.

And this is because God cares for you even though it might it might not feel like it

This is why one of the ways on how to stop worrying and start trusting God is to remember He cares about you. And understanding his love for you puts you in a place of peace.

10.  Live Your Life A Day At A Time

When we worry, we don’t live in the present. We are either trying to live in the past or in the future.

And when we live in the past or the future, we can’t experience the good that is happening right now.

This is why one of the ways on how to stop worrying and start trusting God is to live your life a day at a time!

The book of Matthew, chapter 6 from verses 25 through 33, has a lot of instructions for us about living life a day at a time. It says;

“25 That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing?

26 Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?

27 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?

28 “And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing,

29 yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are.

30 And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?

31 “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’

32 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.

33 Seek the Kingdom of God[a] above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. (NLT)

The Message translation of verse 33 says, “Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.”

So relax and live in the moment. Live life a day at a time. Let go of the wheels of your life and allow God to take control and bring you to a glorious end.
