Many Christians who have just been born again and even some who have been for a while are eager to seek God, hence asking questions on how to seek God.
In our daily activities as children of God, we want Him to be involved and walk with us. One of the first things we need to understand before we go ahead on how to seek God with all our hearts is that God is not an emergency contact line.
So we do not only call on Him in times of difficulties but we seek him for thanksgiving and because we want to seek Him for fellowship.
Nevertheless, the actual challenge many Christians encounter is not when to seek God but how to seek God. Personally, when I received Christ, this was a challenge.
I struggled with how to seek God and went about it in different ways, such as praying and fasting. Doing things based on my human understanding made it a little difficult for me because I had no idea how seeking God actually worked.
I also did not know that I had to remove myself and do these things spiritually. So when you ask the question, “How do I seek God?”I promise I understand what you are searching for, and in this article, I have tips that would be of great help to you.
So, are you craving fellowship with God? Do you want to know how to seek God and find him? Here are 10 things that I did to seek God that worked!

1. Fasting
When we fast, there are so many things that we do wrongly. As Christians, it is important that we know these things in order to help us fast better and these have been outlined in-depth in this article.
When you fast, one of the things to do is ensure you are really fasting and not engaging in a hunger strike. Earlier in this article, I mentioned that I turned to fast at the initial stage of my faith.
I would fast for days, and there would be no result until the day I realized fasting was a highly spiritual and humbling activity. So when I fast, I let go of myself and flesh, which allows me to feel more connected with God.
It helps renew my faith and come back to life better and more prepared. It also makes me more sensitive, which helps me understand when and how God is speaking to me.
Fasting can also help cleanse your system physically and spiritually. In Deuteronomy 9:18-19, we are given an example of Moses, who fasted for a period of 40 days because he was seeking the face of God. After he fasted, God visited him, and what he sought, he found.
The Bible did not tell us “..seek, and you will find..”(Matthew 7:7) just to engage us, but because it is indeed true. Fasting earnestly helps us let go of the body in order to connect our spirits with the spirit of God. This is one of the first steps in seeking God.
2. Prayer And Worship

This is a spiritual exercise that every Christian must engage in. You cannot seek the face of God without speaking to Him.
As Christians, learning how to seek God in prayer is important. It doesn’t really matter how long you pray. What really matters is how well or how sincerely you pray.
In the Bible, we have been given examples of people who sought God through prayers. For David, this was his desire as we see almost throughout the Psalms. While Jesus was on earth, he always prayed to seek the face of God many times before he took a step, even at the time of his death.
Another way to seek the face of God is by worshipping. When we pray, we can also worship; “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks” John 4:23 (NIV).
This verse tells us that God our father seeks this kind of worshipper and if you would like to know more about worship, read this How to worship God
Dear Friend, while we ponder on how to seek God, the verse above is here to tell us that God is also seeking us. Engage in prayers and worship as you seek God, and God will seek you too!
3. Meditating On The Word
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1 (NIV). From this scripture, we can see one of the 10 ways to seek God is by studying the word. The word of God is the Believer’s handbook because through His Word; we get to meet and experience God.
The word of God constantly provides us with encouragement to stay steadfast. Many times, when we seek God, we do not hear him speak to us directly, but when we study the word, God can speak to us through it.
The words become alive, and you are sure that it is God who has given that scripture to you. You are sure it is God who is speaking through the word. So when you seek God, and you do not hear through your ears, God can show you what he needs you to see in the scripture.
4. Obeying The Word

Most times, Christians want to seek God until it comes to obeying His word. Seeking God is searching for interaction and answers, but you can not interact with someone you can not obey. In the book of Exodus, the children of Israel sought the face of God.
So, Moses went up the mountain to seek God on their behalf and received the Ten Commandments. However, due to impatience, the people disobeyed the instruction given to them to wait on the Lord and went about creating idols for themselves.
God was ready to show himself to the Israelites, but disobedience had the better of them. God is big ups on obedience, and an obedient lifestyle can allow God to be available to you when you search for him.
It also gives room for us to learn more about God and make personal discoveries about God, his ways, and his Kingdom. If we adhere strictly to the instructions of the scripture and do the things that we ought to do when we seek God, there is no way God would not honor his word and give you access to him.
5. Perseverance
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9 (NIV). The Bible speaks highly of perseverance.
“You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised” Hebrews 10:36 (NIV).
You may ask how to know or seek God’s will, but by staying steadfast, it is certain that you will find the will of God for you, do it and receive His promises.
As I have mentioned in this article, God is patient and expects us to be patient also by submitting ourselves to process. As we seek God, answers or proof that we have found what we are looking for may not come immediately. But what you need is not to give up.
It doesn’t happen today; go again tomorrow. Persevere until what you require is what you get. Do not engage in a journey and drop it halfway. Walk with God till the finish line.
6. Taking Personal Retreats

In your quest on how to seek God’s face, this is an effective means. God is ever ready to show us his face and provide us with answers to questions that tug at our hearts.
But, are you ready to give your time to God by taking personal spiritual retreats? Commit to setting time aside to be quiet and rest in God.
Retreats take you away from distractions and even the flesh and place you in the presence of God for spiritual refreshing. Retreats bring you closer to God, “Come near to God, and he will come near to you….” James 4:8 (NIV). So as you draw near, this is how to seek God and His will for us.
7. Seeking God Diligently
“…for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV). This verse simply tells us that seeking God is not enough, but seeking Him diligently is what comes with a reward; finding God.
So when you ask how to seek God according to the Bible, remember the word “diligent.” Diligence means being invested, making something or someone your priority. So, Where does God stand in your life? God must be first in your heart because it is only what you put first that you invest in.
As children of God, we ought to search for God even “though He is not far from any one of us.” Acts 17:27 (NIV). After you have sought God diligently, you will be amazed at how God will reveal himself to you.
8. Learn To Wait

One of the words that I found interesting on my journey of how to seek God in prayer was the word “waiting.” I always wondered how I would wait in God’s presence because it seemed hard to be still and silent for a period of time.
Along the line, I realized waiting was a spiritual exercise that I needed to adopt. When we pray, we hurry to leave the presence of God. But many times, God reveals himself to those who are humble and willing to wait.
As you pray and go ahead to wait, you are filled with the Holy Spirit, which automatically connects you to God. As you have sought, so have you found. Understand that with God; there are processes, do not rush in and out. Patience is the key to getting results.
“Blessed are all who wait for him!” Isaiah 30:18 (NIV). It is, therefore, safe to say that waiting in God’s presence is also how to seek God’s blessings. So, be patient and wait!
9. Build An Altar
I recall thinking that altars belonged in the old testaments but how wrong I was. Altars belong in every dispensation, as long as the heavens and earth exist! It is a place for interaction and connection with God.
How to seek God can start with the altar that you build deep inside of you through consistency. God himself instructed the children of Israel in Exodus 20:24 (NIV) ‘Make an altar of earth for me…” So for you to seek God with all your heart, raise an altar for him in your heart.
Dedicate your heart to God and trust him. Take examples from our biblical fathers that have gone before us. Starting from Abraham to David and all the prophets, their altars were their go-to when they sought God for thanksgiving, fellowship, and answers.
This has always been how to seek God’s face. It should not be different for us. As we seek God with all our hearts, let us be sure that our hearts are already dedicated as altars to God.
10. Consecrate And Guard Your Heart

As you take steps to seek God, please do yourself good by purifying your heart. Give yourself entirely and let God know you are available to be used.
Do not be like Jonah; answer God’s call after you have sought him and go on the errand he will send you. And after you have availed yourself, it is important to guard your heart with jealousy.
Ensure you stay free from corrupt desires and everything that does not glorify God. Remember, your heart is an altar that you have raised to God.
Do not allow anything contrary to God into your heart to deter your search. “Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart…”
Psalms 24:3-4(NIV). This scripture goes on to say that It is only they that seek God with clean hands and pure hearts that can ascend the mountain of the Lord and be in His holy presence. So, on how to seek God? Stay pure!
Granted, the spirit of God dwells in us and becomes a part of us when we become born again; however, it is pertinent for both old and new believers to seek the face of God because, with God, we can never have enough.
So, as we aspire and think of how to seek the kingdom of God, we should remember that seeking the presence and face of God never gets old, and no matter how long you have been in the faith, seeking God should be your go-to, not for matters of urgency but for everything that concerns you.
Dear Friend, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you…” Jeremiah 29:13-14(NIV).
