How To Recognize Spiritual Attack In 9 Ways

Sharing is caring!

Are you feeling weary, anxious, or confused about many things but can’t understand why? If you’re like me, you’ve faced seasons where everything feels off, and nothing makes sense.

As believers, we must remember that our battles are physical and spiritual. I’ve walked this path, and I know what it’s like to feel spiritually attacked without realizing it. So, what are the strategies on how to recognize spiritual attacks?

First, pay attention to your emotions. If you feel sudden fear, confusion, or overwhelming sadness, that’s a sign. Second, notice your relationship with God. If you find praying or reading the Bible hard, that’s not a coincidence.

These are just a few signs that something deeper is happening—and it’s spiritual. Recognizing these signs is the first step to fighting back.

You might be wondering what else you need to look out for. But don’t worry; I can help you identify these attacks before they damage your faith. I’ve learned the strategies to recognize when the enemy is at work, and I want to share them with you.

In this post, I will share 10 strategies on how to recognize spiritual attacks and expose the enemy’s tactics so you can stand strong in your faith.

1.  Loss Of Interest In Spiritual Things

Satan doesn’t usually announce his attacks with flashing lights and sirens. He prefers to work in the shadows, gradually eroding our spiritual fervor. The first step in recognizing spiritual attacks is that the enemy causes us to lose interest in spiritual things.

The enemy knows that we become vulnerable when our spiritual life is lukewarm. Like a thief in the night, he creeps in, subtly stealing our passion for prayer, our hunger for God’s Word, and our joy in worship.

The reason why the enemy makes us lose interest in the things of God is that he knows a lukewarm Christian is a powerless Christian. When we lose our fire for God, we lose our effectiveness in His kingdom.

We become like salt that has lost its flavor, good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot (Matthew 5:13). Maybe you find yourself skipping church more often, or you no longer pray like you used to.

Worship songs that once moved you to tears now don’t even move you. These aren’t signs of failure; they’re a wake-up call, a reminder that the enemy is at work.

If you’re experiencing a loss of interest in spiritual things, don’t give up! The enemy wants you to stay stuck in that lukewarm state, but God wants to restore your passion and zeal. Here are a few things you can do:

First, recognize it for what it is: a spiritual attack. Don’t beat yourself up or feel guilty. Instead, take it to the Lord in prayer.

Be honest with Him about how you’re feeling. He already knows, but He wants to hear it from you. Pray for renewed hunger and thirst for God. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you afresh.

Spend time in God’s Word. Even if it initially feels like a chore, keep reading and meditating on Scripture. Connect with other believers. Surround yourself with people who will encourage and uplift you.

Remember, the enemy may try to extinguish the flame of your faith, but he can’t steal your salvation. With God’s help, you can overcome any spiritual attack and rekindle your passion for Him.

2.  Struggling With Temptation More Than Usual

The enemy will do everything possible to derail you from your walk with God.  One subtle yet potent tactic is to intensify the temptations you face. If you find yourself wrestling with temptation more than usual, that’s how to recognize a spiritual attack.

I’ve experienced this, and it’s a tough place to be. You might feel it too a sudden surge of cravings, doubts, or distractions that pull you away from prayer, Scripture, and community.

Not long ago, I faced a season when old temptations reappeared. During this season, I learned how to recognize spiritual attacks by noticing how these temptations intensified.

Things I had dealt with in the past; like unhealthy habits and negative thoughts, suddenly felt like a constant presence in my mind.

I questioned my faith and wondered why I was struggling so much. It became clear that the enemy was targeting my weaknesses, trying to draw me away from my relationship with God.

When wrestling with temptation, ask yourself: Why is this happening? Are there patterns in my life that allow these thoughts to creep in?

Sometimes, the answer lies in neglecting our spiritual disciplines—prayer, reading Scripture, or fellowship with other believers. Just as we need physical food, our spirits require nourishment too.

So, what can you do when you’re struggling with temptation more than usual? First, acknowledge it as a spiritual attack. Don’t face it alone; share your struggles with a trusted friend or mentor who can pray for you and hold you accountable.

Equip yourself with Scripture that speaks to your specific struggles. Knowing how to recognize spiritual attacks through temptation is essential for spiritual growth. Don’t let the enemy have the upper hand. Take action today and revive your spiritual life.

3.  Not Wanting To Go To Church Service

Have you ever woken up on a Sunday morning and felt an unusual heaviness in your heart? You know you should be getting ready for church, but instead, you feel unmotivated at the thought of going. This is not just a bad mood or tiredness.

It’s something more profound. Not wanting to go to church service is how to recognize a spiritual attack. When the urge to avoid church arises, it often comes with feelings of inadequacy or fatigue.

In the Bible, we see that isolation is a tool the enemy often uses to weaken believers. 1 Peter 5:8 warns us, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

Lions hunt by isolating their prey from the pack, and the enemy works similarly he knows that when we stop gathering with other believers, we are more vulnerable to discouragement and deception. I’ll be honest: there was a time I didn’t want to go to church.

I’d make excuses: “I’m tired,” “I’ll catch the sermon online,” or “I can just read the Bible at home.” Sound familiar? Maybe you’ve been there, too, feeling this overwhelming reluctance to step into a church service.

I used to brush it off as a phase, but I realized it wasn’t just tiredness or laziness it was a spiritual attack.

The enemy knows that we are stronger, united in worship and praise when we gather. It’s essential to recognize this feeling for what it is a spiritual attack designed to keep us from experiencing the fullness of God’s presence.

It’s not just about feeling lazy or burnt out. When you start to notice that attending church service feels like a chore, or worse, you don’t want to go at all, it’s essential to ask yourself, why?

This is how to recognize a spiritual attack, when something as foundational as gathering with the body of Christ becomes something you avoid or feel indifferent about.

If you find yourself in this place, feeling like you don’t want to attend church, don’t ignore it. Take action. Pray and ask God to reveal what might block your desire to fellowship with other believers.

Often, the enemy tries to plant seeds of isolation and doubt to pull you away from the community that will keep your faith alive, and you should not give him that chance to make you forsake the gathering of the brethren. Heb 10:35.

4.  Noticing A Pattern Of Bad Luck Or Misfortune

When things go wrong repeatedly, it can feel like you’re stuck in a cycle of bad luck. You try your best, but nothing seems to work.

Like everything you touch turns to dust? Maybe you’ve lost your Job, your car broke down, and then your relationship fell apart, all in the space of a few weeks.

It’s easy to see it as a coincidence, but it’s something more. Observing the trends of evil occurrences in your life is how to recognize spiritual attacks.

In the Bible, Job faced something very similar. He was a faithful man, living a righteous life, but suddenly, everything fell apart. His children died, he lost his wealth, and even his health was taken from him.

This wasn’t just random misfortune but a direct attack from the enemy. Satan wanted to shake Job’s faith, but Job held on to God even when everything around him crumbled.

Recognizing a spiritual attack can be hard, especially when it seems like everything is falling apart. The enemy is crafty and loves to discourage us. He wants us to feel defeated and give up on our faith.

But we have a powerful weapon in Jesus! He has already won the victory; we are more than conquerors through Him. So, how do we recognize when these patterns of bad luck are more than just coincidences? Examine your life.

Are you experiencing setbacks in multiple areas of your life; career, business, finances? The enemy loves to scatter our dreams and goals to destabilize us.

Also, consider your physical health. Are you experiencing unexplained illnesses or injuries? The enemy can attack our bodies in an attempt to weaken us spiritually.

If you’re seeing this pattern in your life, don’t ignore it. The enemy’s goal is to weaken your faith and make you doubt God’s goodness. But remember, you have power through Jesus.

Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that we are not fighting flesh and blood but spiritual forces. Your response should be to strengthen your spiritual armour pray more, read the Word, and stand firm in your faith.

5.  Having Frequent Conflicts In Your Relationship

The devil knows relationships are powerful. He knows God values unity between two people, especially in marriage. He knows a happy home is a strong foundation for a fulfilling life and a powerful testimony to God’s love.

That’s why he schemes and plots to tear them apart. He whispers lies, stirs up jealousy, and plants seeds of doubt… all in an attempt to create division where there should be unity.

That’s why sometimes when you face conflicts in your relationship, it’s not just about misunderstanding or personality differences. It’s more than what you think it is.

If you want to know how to recognize spiritual attacks in your relationship, look at how constantly you have disagreements and what you even disagree over.

Have you noticed how arguments seem to pop up over the smallest things, like who didn’t close the door or who didn’t call first? You both start talking, and before you know it, you’re in a heated argument, wondering how you even got there.

That’s the devil at work, and he’s trying to confuse in your midst and make you start seeing each other as enemies. Not every conflict is natural; some are spiritual forces trying to tear down what God has built between you.

Remember when Jesus rebuked Peter in Matthew 16:23, saying, “Get behind me, Satan!”? Peter wasn’t the problem; the devil was trying to use him as a tool to cause division. The same happens today the enemy tries to use conflict to break apart what God has joined together.

He knows a divided relationship is weaker and easier to destroy. Suppose you’re constantly arguing over little things and having misunderstandings. It’s time to wake up, fight the devil, and stop him from destroying your bond.

Turn to God in prayer to strengthen your bond and expose every tactic of the enemy. Together, you can overcome the enemy’s tactics and cultivate a loving, peaceful relationship that honors Him.

6.  Struggling To Pray Or Read The Bible

The enemy is crafty, and one of his favourite tricks is to keep you away from the two most powerful tools God has given you—prayer and the Bible. Think about it: If he can keep you from speaking to God and hearing from Him, he’s already winning half the battle.

This isn’t new either; the Bible gives us many examples. Remember when Jesus was in the wilderness for 40 days? The enemy tried to tempt Him by twisting the Word of God (Matthew 4:1-11). Satan knows the power in God’s Word, and he will do everything to keep it out of your hands.

To recognize spiritual attacks, check your attitude toward God’s Word. When was the last time you studied your Bible? For many of us, finding the motivation to pray or read Scripture can feel difficult.

You might feel weighed down by life’s distractions, or maybe it just seems easier to scroll through social media than to read the Bible or pray. But that struggle to pray and read the Bible is a sign of spiritual attack.

So, how can you fight back? Set aside specific times to pray or read the Bible. Set a timer for just five minutes of prayer. Pick a verse to memorize each week. Make a habit of reading a chapter daily. Even when it feels hard, push through.

Ask God to ignite your passion for His Word. Pray for focus. When you take these small steps, you’ll see how to recognize spiritual attacks in other areas of your life more clearly. Sometimes, praying through God’s Word is a step of faith in itself.

The more we immerse ourselves in God’s Word, the stronger we become against those attacks. Make that commitment today because your spiritual health depends on it.

7.  Having Bad Dreams Or Nightmares

Nothing is physical in this world. The spiritual realm controls the physical. If you’ve ever woken up in a cold sweat from a nightmare, you might wonder if there’s more to it than just a bad dream.

As believers, we know that not everything is as it seems; sometimes, our dreams are a window into spiritual battles happening beyond our sight.

Please think of the prophet Daniel; he had visions of beasts and wars. These dreams were messages from God, warning him of spiritual battles ahead.

In the same way, your bad dreams could be a way to recognize spiritual attacks, a way to alert you that there’s a struggle happening in the unseen realm.

The Bible talks about the enemy coming to steal, kill, and destroy, and sometimes, those attacks come in the form of terrifying dreams.

Maybe you’re dreaming of falling, being chased, or being pressed by demons in your sleep. These are all signs of a spiritual attack. Pay attention to these dreams! They’re like alarm bells, alerting you that something’s not right spiritually.

To address this in a practical way, keep a journal of your dreams. Write down what you remember and any feelings that linger afterward.

This can help you identify patterns and recognize signs of spiritual attack. Knowing how to recognize spiritual attacks, you can better equip yourself to confront them.

If you’re having these kinds of dreams, don’t panic! It doesn’t mean you’re losing the battle. It just means it’s time to fight back! Pray, read your Bible, and ask for help from other believers.

The enemy wants to steal your peace and joy, but we’ve got a weapon he can’t handle: the name of Jesus! So, next time you wake up from a bad dream, don’t just roll over and go back to sleep. Take it to God. He’s bigger than any nightmare and will fight your battles for you.

8.  There’s No Burden To Fulfil Your Purpose

We are created for a purpose, which every believer knows. But not having the burden to fulfil your purpose anymore is how to recognize spiritual attacks.

You see, God has planted dreams and desires in your heart. That burning passion to make a difference? That’s not just a coincidence! It’s God’s call on your life.

So when you start feeling apathetic, when the fire within starts to dim, please don’t ignore it. The enemy doesn’t want you to step into your calling. He wants you to stay stuck, to believe the lie that your purpose doesn’t matter. Look at Moses.

He was called to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, but he felt inadequate. He made excuses, saying he wasn’t a good speaker. But God reassured him, reminding him that He would be with him every step of the way.

Sometimes, the enemy tries to convince us that we’re not good enough and don’t have what it takes. But God doesn’t call the qualified; He qualifies the called. So, if you lack motivation and a sense of purposelessness, it’s time to take a stand. Pray.

Seek God’s guidance. Remember, you were created for a reason!  Don’t let the enemy steal your joy.  Embrace your purpose with a heart full of passion, and watch God do amazing things through you.

9.  Experiencing Sudden Changes In Behaviour Or Attitude

As believers, we need to recognize that sudden shifts in behaviour or attitude are more than just “bad moods.” Sometimes, they are signs of a spiritual attack. The Bible tells us our struggle isn’t against flesh and blood but against evil spiritual forces (Ephesians 6:12).

These forces want to steal your peace, joy, and relationship with God. One sneaky way they do this is by messing with your emotions and thoughts.

Remember how King Saul became consumed by jealousy and rage towards David after the Spirit of God left him? (1 Samuel 18:6-11) That wasn’t just a bad mood but a spiritual attack to destroy Saul’s life and reign.

Think about how subtle the enemy can be. He doesn’t always come with loud warnings; sometimes, he works quietly, sowing seeds of bitterness, anger, or confusion. You may wake up one day and feel completely different without understanding why.

That’s why it’s so important to be spiritually alert and recognize when our behaviour changes for no apparent reason. This is how to recognize a spiritual attack before it has a chance to take root.

So, what should you do? When you start noticing these sudden shifts, pray immediately. Ask God for clarity and wisdom. Surround yourself with Scripture, worship, and prayer.

God’s Word is our weapon in these battles, just like Jesus used Scripture to resist the devil in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11).

The enemy subtly distances us from God and those around us. Don’t let him succeed. Stand firm, pray, and trust God to restore your peace and joy.

How Do I Know If My Spirit Is Disturbed?

Everyone experiences ups and downs in life, but sometimes, we feel a deeper sense of unease that’s hard to shake off. This might be a sign that your spirit is disturbed.

So, how do I know if my spirit is disturbed? You will feel restless, uneasy, anxious, lack concentration, and lose sleep for no clear reason.

You may have trouble praying or connecting with God, feel distant from others, or even lose interest in things you once loved. Your heart feels heavy, and there’s a sense of confusion or fear. You might also feel tempted to act out of character, like being angry or frustrated easily.

These are all signs your spirit might be troubled. When you feel this way, take time to pray and ask God for peace and understanding. Seek His Word and surround yourself with things that remind you of His love and truth.

Signs Of A Spiritually Attacked Christian

As Christians, we face battles that go beyond what we can see. Sometimes, these battles affect our spirit, making us feel weak or distant from God.

It’s essential to understand when these attacks are happening so we can fight back with prayer and God’s Word.

So, what are the signs of a spiritually attacked Christian?

You might feel distant from God, struggle to pray, or lose interest in reading the Bible. You could also experience fear, anxiety, or confusion, even when there’s no apparent reason for it.

Another sign is a sudden change in your attitude or behaviour, like anger, sadness, or hopelessness. You may also feel tempted to succumb to sin or lose faith. These are all spiritual attack symptoms.

These symptoms don’t mean you’re weak or that God has abandoned you. They are signs that you must strengthen your connection with God and fight against the devil’s attacks.

Conclusion

The enemy works subtly, but with awareness and God’s strength, you can stand firm. Don’t ignore those sudden shifts in your emotions, relationship with God, or physical well-being. These are signs that a deeper battle is happening.

When you feel under attack, turn to God immediately pray, read the Word, and seek the support of other believers. Remember, you are not alone.

God is always with you, and His power is greater than the more significant lack the enemy can bring. Stay vigilant, trust in the Lord, and lean on His strength to overcome every spiritual battle.

Save this for later!
