1.  Ask God In Prayer

If you have ever asked what is my spiritual gift from God, engaging in prayer is one of the ways on how to identify your spiritual gifts.

If you are still unsure about your spiritual gifts, then take some time and genuinely ask the Lord to reveal them to you.Once you start praying, don’t relent. Keep on asking until you get an answer.

Whether or not it comes immediately or takes time is up to God, but be persistent in seeking him out on these matters; he loves nothing more than answering those who seek him.

John 16:24 is a reminder that when we ask God, we will receive answers of what we ask of Him. It says, “Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask, and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.”

So in your quest on how to identify your spiritual gifts taking time to pray about your gifts is a great place for you to start. When you start praying about them, you open up a line of communication between you and God.

The more you communicate with him, the easier He’ll reveal them to you so you can use your gifts for His glory. So ask the Lord to reveal your spiritual gifts to you and help you to understand how to manifest them.

2.  Ask People Around You

Another way on how to identify your gifts is by talking with people who know you well, such as friends, family members or mentors.

They can provide an honest appraisal of your personality and skills, giving you greater insight into what type of spiritual gift you might have.

This is one way to consider on how to discover your spiritual gifts. Asking the people closest to you what they think your spiritual gifts are. People who know you well might be able to tell you something that surprises you.

Friends and family know more about your personality than anyone else, so this is a great place to start when looking for spiritual gifts. Ask them what they think your spiritual gifts are and why they believe that’s the case.

Keep in mind that people may not always know how to identify someone else’s spiritual gifts, so don’t be discouraged if the answer is not what you were expecting or hoping for.

Some people might say something like I’m not sure or take a wild guess. Take it as an opportunity to ask more questions about the reason behind their answer. It can be helpful in the discovery process to have a list of possible spiritual gifts written out before speaking with others about this topic.

3.  Pay Attention To God’s Leading

If you want to know your spiritual gifts, pay attention when God is leading you in a direction. If you feel led by the Holy Spirit, go with it. He’s not going to lead you wrong.

When was the last time God did something for you that wasn’t meant for your benefit? I am sure the answer is never. So when He tells you that there’s something he wants for you, don’t hesitate.

Just do it and wait on him for the next thing. Personally, this is one of the most effective ways on how to identify your spiritual gifts because you are relying on God’s direction. These may be silent promptings of the Spirit. However, be alert in whatever ways God choses to lead and the gifts He manifests through you.

4.  Observe Other Believers In Action

The fourth tip on how to identify your spiritual gifts is by observing other believers in action. Notice the ways they interact with others.

Pay attention to their strengths and weaknesses and try to figure out what they might be good at. This will give you a good idea of where you can focus your energy and make a difference as well.

So if you have been asking how do you know what your spiritual gifts are, especially when you have no ideal where to start, you can observe other believers in action. This is a great way to see the different ways that people serve the Lord and His people.

For example, someone with a gift of teaching or administration might make decisions on behalf of the church board or offer insightful remarks during a Bible study.

If someone has a gift of encouragement, they might be quick with words of praise and support for others who are in need. One of the ways to identify your spiritual gifts is by observing others who seem to be good at specific things. From there, look into your interests and abilities to see if there’s a connection with one of these skills and a possible gift.

5.  Keep A Journal Of What God Is Doing In Your Life

As we live, God doesn’t leave us clueless to ensure we do not miss His leading. This is why God often uses us in different ways in our lives, even before we are conscious of His move.

These gifts we manifest may not be fully matured. However, they are seeds planted in us by God to enable us to recognize these special abilities.

This is why another way on how to identify your spiritual gifts is by journaling. Keeping a journal is another approach to discovering your spiritual skills.

Record your experiences with God in a journal. One of my yearly rituals is to write in a unique journal that I use exclusively. Doing this allows me to look back over my walk with the Lord in a unique way. It helps me see how God’s Spirit in me is producing growth over time. Journaling has become one of the ways that I best connect with God.

Journaling helps me be patient in the journey I’m on with Christ, and to open up to God. It also helps me to be more honest with God and with myself.

And it further reveals things I did as God gave the instruction revealing the gifts that I manifested in obedience to His leading, and in the long run, I can see the gifts I easily manifest in my life. So keeping a journal of what God is doing in your life will help you answer the question, how can you find your spiritual gift? as it also helped me.

Everyone has certain talents or God-given gifts that they are skilled in. For example, some people are very hospitable and relatable and know how to make people feel comfortable.

Some individuals are business-oriented, teachers, musicians or parents or nurturing and providing care. These talents can be more than hobbies or even careers.

These gifts can be used for the glory of God, and further more they often point to ways on how to identify your spiritual gifts. James 1:15 tells us, “Every good and perfect gift is from above…” While you may be unsure of your spiritual gifts, your natural talents often point to the gift of the Spirit at work in your life.

There are so many problems in this world that need solving. This is why our life is just as importantant as the problems we are created to solve.

So have you found your purpose for living? Have you discovered the problem your life is to solve? If your answers are yes, chances are that you have already started noticing certain unique abilities at work in your life to enable you to achieve this.

For example, if you feel created to solve the problem of sickness and death, then the gift of healing and working of miracles would naturally manifest in your life above other spiritual gifts.

So take time and discover the problems you were created to solve and what God expects from you, as your spiritual gifts are often revealed within this discovery.

8.  Look For Gifts In Moments Of Adversity

There are many moments in our lives when we feel like the world is going against us. In these times, you can also find your spiritual gifts.

For example, if you feel an overwhelming sense of peace and gratitude during a difficult time and easily find the courage to go on, then might be one of your gifts is the gift of faith.

During hard times we can choose between letting our best or worst qualities win. Focus on discovering and using your best qualities and gifts when times are tough.

9.  Search The Word Of God

Our Heavenly Father helps us discover and develop our gifts through clues found in the scriptures. The Bible is full of verses that speak about the importance and purpose of our spiritual gifts.

There’s a verse for everyone who seeks the answer to what their spiritual gift might be. The Bible in 1 Chorinthians 12:1-11 says;

(1) Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:  (2) You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led.

(3) Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.  (4) There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

(5) There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.  (6) And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.

(7) But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: (8) for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, (9) to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,

(10) to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. (11) But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
Likewise there are other Bible verses that talks about spiritual gifts, take out time and read abou them.

Can Spiritual Gifts Be Taken Away?

For a long time, many have debated the topic, ‘can spiritual gifts be taken away? One passage that is often brought up in the debate is found in the Book of Romans 11:29. Paul wrote, “For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.”

Paul said the gifts of God are irrevocable. Many use this statement to assert that God would not take away any spiritual gifts He originally gave to the church.

Therefore, this statement solves the cessationist/non-cessationist issue (this is a Christian theological dispute on whether spiritual gifts remained available to the church or whether their operation ceased with the Apostolic Age of the church).

God will not take back any of the spiritual gifts that He has given to the church; the gifts will continue as long as faithful believers exist.

However, there is an important point we should learn from this. But, again, whether or not God does this is completely up to Him. He is the One who makes all the decisions in these cases.

Learning your spiritual gifts can be an empowering experience. Knowing what you are capable of doing by the help of the Holy Spirit can help you find your place and bring more meaning into your life.

We hope that these nine steps point you in the direction of your spiritual gifts, and I pray you will use them in the service of our Lord Jesus and for the benefit of others.

Save this for later!
