What Does God Require Of Us As His Children

Sharing is caring!

Christianity is not just one of those religions out there. It’s a personal relationship and walk with God. But sometimes, we might be confused and ask ourselves: “What does God require of us? This is a natural question we have.

God desires a genuine relationship with us, built on love and a desire to follow His teachings. Through His words, God reveals His desires for us and the purpose for our existence. God doesn’t just hand you a rulebook.

He longs for a personal relationship with us, a relationship where we can commune with Him to understand His will, and He, in turn, guides and leads us toward fulfilment. In this blog post, we’ll explore God’s expectations of us as believers and share ten things God wants us to do.

1.  God Wants Us To Love Him With All Our Heart, Soul, And Mind

What does God require of us? As believers, we often think about what God expects of us. We strive to follow the teachings, live a good life, and contribute to the church. But have you ever considered that God’s desire for us is more of love than a burden?

God doesn’t ask for the impossible. God does not require more from us than what we can give. He understands our limitations and our human struggles. He created us with love, which He longs for in return.

This love isn’t about blind obedience or following rigid rules. It’s about a deep affection and appreciation for the Creator who gave us life, purpose, and unconditional love.

So, what does God require of us? God wants us to love Him with all our heart, soul, and mind. This means putting Him first in our lives. It means striving to know Him better, to understand His character and teachings.

The Bible says, in Deuteronomy 6:5: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” Loving God with all your heart also means loving what He loves.

Show compassion to others, extending kindness and forgiveness. Share your blessings and give to others in your community. A life lived according to God’s teachings is filled with purpose and joy.

So, start by dedicating time each day to connect with Him through prayer, expressing your love and appreciation. Let His love guide your actions, and you will fulfil the greatest commandment.

2.  God Requires Us To Follow Jesus And His Teachings

Accepting Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior is not something that doesn’t come with a demand from us. So, what does God expect from us? One of the things God demands from us as His children is to follow Jesus and His teachings.

We are saved by faith and not by works, but we must work out our salvation daily. If you love and admire someone, you naturally want to be like that person and follow that person’s example.

When we decide to follow Christ, it’s not just a one-time event; it’s a lifelong commitment to align our lives with His teachings. Following Jesus means more than acknowledging Him as our Savior; it means patterning our lives after His example. Jesus walked in love, compassion, and humility.

He taught us to love our neighbours as ourselves, to forgive others, and to serve those in need. So, What does God require of us? God requires us to follow Jesus and give ourselves to the Word of God, allowing it to shape our thoughts, attitudes, and actions.

As followers of Christ, we are called to emulate His character and live according to His teachings in every aspect of our lives. So, how do we follow Jesus? It’s not about following some set of rules. It’s about understanding the heart behind His message. Here are two ways to follow Jesus and his teachings;

I.  Read the Gospels and study the teachings of Jesus. See how He interacted with the world, the values, and the principles He lived by.

II.  Don’t just read Jesus’ words. Please put what you read into action and try to live by them. Show love to those around you, forgive those who trespass against you, stand up for what’s right, and help those in need.

As we learn and grow in our faith, our actions will naturally reflect the love and compassion Jesus embodied.

3.  God Wants Us To Obey His Commandments

One of the things God demands from us as His children is that God wants us to obey His commandments. As Christians, we often focus on outward acts of worship, but God looks at the condition of our hearts.

Our sacrifices, tithing, or offerings do not move God. He’s interested in our obedience. Obedience to God’s commandments is a reflection of our love for Him.

Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). It’s not merely about following rules but honouring God with our lives.

We demonstrate our faith and trust in His wisdom and goodness when we obey God. For example, when we choose to forgive others as God has forgiven us, we experience the freedom and joy that comes from obedience to His word.

So, What does God require of us? God wants us to obey His commandments. To obey God’s commandments, first, we must know the instructions he wants us to follow.

Spend time reading and studying the Bible to understand what God expects of us. Second, rely on the Holy Spirit for strength and guidance. We cannot obey God in our strength, but through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can live lives that honour Him.

In summary, obedience to God’s commandments is not optional for believers. It’s a vital aspect of our relationship with Him. As we walk in obedience, we experience His blessings and grow closer to Him.

Let’s commit to obeying God’s commandments out of love and reverence for Him, trusting that His ways are always best.

4.  God Wants Us To Pray To Him

What does God require from us as Christians? God’s expectations of us as believers are clear and profound. He desires a personal relationship with each of us built on faith, love, and obedience.

One of the things God demands from us as His children is that God wants us to pray to Him. Our sufficiency is not limited to our strength or understanding; it’s found in our relationship with God through prayer.

Prayer is our direct line of communication with God. It’s not just a ritualistic recitation of words; it’s a conversation with our Heavenly Father. We can pray anytime, anywhere, and about anything.

Whether in our days of challenges or when all is well, God wants us to pour out our hearts to Him because He hears and cares for us. Prayer has been a cornerstone of faith for God’s people. Throughout the Bible, we can see examples of the power of prayer.

Hannah prayed to God for a child, and God opened her womb and blessed us with not just a child but a great prophet, Samuel, and other sons and daughters.

David also prayed to God in times of trouble, and God delivered him from many of his afflictions. Jesus Himself set the ultimate example of prayer.

During His Ministry, He often retreats to solitary places to commune with His Father and commit His purposes to Him for empowerment and fulfilment.

So, what does God require of us? God wants us to pray to Him consistently and sincerely. As believers, we should approach prayer humbly and acknowledge our dependence on God and His sovereignty over our lives.

Also, we should pray with faith, believing God hears and answers our prayers according to His will. In summary, prayer is not just a religious duty; it’s a powerful tool for every believer.

God desires us to cultivate a strong prayer life where we seek His guidance, express our gratitude, and lay our burdens at His feet. So, let’s always approach the throne of grace with confidence and pray to God.

5.  God Wants Us To Live A Holy Life

One of the things God demands from us as His children is that He wants us to live a holy life. Holiness might sound intimidating, but it means living a life separated from God’s purpose and set apart from sin.

We become vessels fit to carry His presence when we strive for purity. I’m sure we wouldn’t pour clean water into a dirty cup, would we? Holiness isn’t about self-righteousness or being perfect.

It’s about reflecting God’s character in our choices, actions, and how we treat others. Living a holy life isn’t about legalistic restrictions; it’s about aligning our hearts with God’s will.

It’s about letting go of things that hinder our walk with Him, like negativity, dishonesty, or clinging to harmful habits. So, what does God require of us?

As believers, we are called to be holy and live a life of holiness because, without holiness, we cannot access the depths of God and experience the closeness and intimacy God desires with us. Here are two ways to be Holy and live a life of Holiness;

I.  Study the Bible and let the Holy Spirit work inside to convict and guide you toward a transformed life.

II.  Open yourself to do the will of God daily.

This doesn’t happen overnight, but through consistent prayer, studying scripture, and surrounding ourselves with positive influences. Every step towards living a holy life brings us closer to experiencing the fullness of God’s love and purpose for us.

6.  God Wants Us To Be Humble And Not Boastful

What does God require of us as Christians? In the time we find ourselves, understanding God’s expectations as Christians is paramount for our spiritual life.

One of the things God requires from us as His children is that God wants us to be humble and not boastful. Humility is the cornerstone of Christian character, contrasting with the pride and arrogance of the world. Humility recognises our dependence on God and acknowledges His sovereignty over our lives.

Throughout Scripture, we can see many examples of the importance of humility. Moses was described as the most humble man on earth, and Jesus exemplified humility by washing His disciples’ feet. Humility is not self-degradation but a proper understanding of our position before God and others.

It’s about putting others’ needs before ourselves and esteeming them higher than ourselves. Arrogance, on the other hand, stems from pride and leads to self-exaltation and division.

So, What does God require of us? As believers, God wants us to be humble in everything we do. We are called to emulate Christ’s humility and live a life marked by servanthood and compassion. So, let’s be humble in our walk with God and follow the example of Jesus Christ, who humbled Himself even to death on the cross.

7.  God Wants Us To Help Those In Needs

Understanding God’s expectations from every believer is important for living out our faith authentically, especially in the eyes of unbelievers. One of the things God demands from us as His children is that God wants us to help those in need.

Our actions speak volumes about our relationship with Him and His love for humanity. Helping those in need involves various acts of kindness, compassion, and generosity.

In the bible, we can see how God’s people reach out to the less fortunate, feed the hungry, and care for the widows and orphans. Helping others goes beyond what we think it is; it involves a heartfelt desire to alleviate suffering and meet tangible needs.

It’s about recognizing every individual’s inherent dignity and worth, regardless of their circumstances. Helping those in need is not about seeking recognition or reward but about demonstrating God’s love in practical ways.

As believers, we are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus in a broken world. We should look for opportunities to serve and bless those around us, regardless of their background or circumstances.

It could be volunteering at a nearby outreach, providing financial assistance to a struggling family, or listening to someone in trouble. Every act of kindness and compassion matters in God’s kingdom.

So, What does God require of us? As believers, we should be kind to those around us and help those in need, no matter the little we have. Let’s not disregard the suffering around us, but instead, let’s accept our call to love and serve others as Christ did.

8.  God Wants Us To Surrender Our Will To His And Trust Him Completely

One of the things God demands from us as His children is that He wants us to surrender our will to His and trust Him completely. Surrendering our will to God is not blind obedience but rather a deep trust that God’s plan is the best for us.

we were kids, we completely trusted our parents. Sure, they made decisions we didn’t always understand, but we knew they had our best interests at heart. Surrendering to God’s will is similar.

He sees the bigger picture, and His purposes are far greater than we can comprehend. Look at Abraham in Genesis 22. God asked him to sacrifice his son, something that went against every human instinct. Yet, Abraham trusted. He surrendered his will because his faith in God was strong.

Even Jesus, in the Garden of Gethsemane (Mark 14:36), acknowledges the difficulty but surrenders his will to God. So, what does God require of us? As believers, we should surrender our will to God and strongly believe in His plans.

This doesn’t mean every situation will be easy, or we should sit idle and expect God to perform magic. There will be moments of doubt and confusion, but we should have faith in God, pursue our goals, make plans, and play our part.

The key is to trust that God is in control and will bring His plans to fulfilment even when they differ from ours. So, let go of the need to control everything and believe God will lead you on the path He has designed for you.

9.  God Wants Us To Share What We Have With Others

One of the things God demands from us as His children is that God wants us to share what we have with others. Everything we have, big or small, comes from God. We’re entrusted with these blessings, not as owners but as stewards.

A steward is someone who manages something on behalf of another. In our case, God is the owner, and we’re responsible for caring for His gifts.

Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). Being a good steward is not about giving money to the poor or those who need cash. We can share our time, talents, and home with strangers.

Maybe you can fix things; offer to help a neighbour in need. Perhaps you enjoy cooking; bring a meal to a sick family. Sharing what we have, no matter how big it is, reflects our understanding and appreciation for God’s provision and brings blessings to others.

Look at the story of the five loaves and two fish (Matthew 14:15-21). A young boy offered his little to the disciples, and Jesus miraculously multiplied it to feed a multitude. This teaches us that even insignificant contributions can have a huge impact when placed in God’s hands.

So, what does God require of us? As believers, we should not be stingy with whatever we have. We should be good stewards and share our resources with others, recognizing that everything we possess is a gift from God. So, let’s open our hearts and extend a helping hand to those around us.

10.  God Wants Us Always To Tell The Truth And Be Honest In All We Do

One of the things God demands from us as His children are that God wants us always to tell the truth and be honest in all we do. Trust is the bedrock of any healthy relationship. Just as we wouldn’t want someone to mislead us, God desires a genuine connection with us built on truthfulness.

This isn’t just about avoiding blatant lies. Honesty encompasses everything from our words and actions to our intentions and attitudes. Living an honest life isn’t always easy.

There might be situations where the truth feels uncomfortable, or a little white lie might seem like the easier way out. But the smallest dishonesty can break people’s trust in us and damage our relationship with God and others.

So, what does God require of us? As believers, we should be honest in our dealings with others and always tell the truth no matter the cost or the situation. Building trust takes time and effort.

When we consistently demonstrate honesty, even in the face of challenges, we build a strong foundation for genuine relationships. People are drawn to those they can rely on and those whose word carries weight. So, let’s be honest in what we do and tell people the truth they need to hear.

God doesn’t give us any complicated rules. He wants us to be good people who treat each other like Jesus would do, help those in need, and always acknowledge Him as Lord.

God requires you to love Him, obey His commands, and show kindness to others. You are expected to live a life honouring Him and reflecting His love for those around you. So, let’s strive to walk in obedience and love each day, knowing that pleasing God is the greatest joy.
