Every believer’s dream is to know how to talk to God and have a deep and intimate conversation with him, where we speak to him, and he responds. It is not gimmicking, not fiction but natural.
God listens to His people, and if we only talk to him, we will realize we are not just having a discussion alone; we are having a conversation with God, our Father.
I know God is Almighty, the creator of the heavens and the earth, but he’s also very humble, friendly and loves maintaining healthy relationships with his people.
Hence, Christianity is not a religion; it is a faith to build and have a relationship with our heavenly Father.
I remember vividly as a young Christian how we were taught in Sunday school how to talk to God, for God is a personality, and we can have a deep relationship where we can talk to him, listen, and he will speak to us.
That day, my mind was changed by that information, and l never stopped listening to God. I bought books on talking to God and listening to him, and my life changed.
Today, l have numerous experiences of my encounter with God and how l have spoken to God and how he responds to me, talks to me in various ways, and walks with me daily.
Hence, I will share some of my experiences in the days ahead. Furthermore, I know you’re eager to ask, “What are the different ways how to talk to God?” These are some steps and tips that will help you learn how to communicate with God.

1. Perception Of God
The way we see God is everything. This perception goes on to influence our spiritual life and affect everything. A typical example is if we feel God is incapable of forgiving our numerous sins, how do we attain salvation?
Secondly, if we think God won’t accept us back when we backslide, how do we pick ourselves and grow in grace?
Perception! Perception! Perception! It is such an important component or quality when it comes to how we see God because it influences every aspect of our spiritual journey.
Peter, a disciple of Jesus, still went on to do great and mighty things, propagating the gospel, healing the sick, and teaching the undiluted word of God, even after he denied Jesus to his face three good times.
Perception! On the order hand, Judas Iscariot took a rope and committed suicide because he felt he was irredeemable. The blood of Jesus is too powerful that no amount of sin cannot wash away.
Furthermore, God is a bosom father, a loving friend, and a great king, no more, no less. Why all these? It is because he displays such qualities associated with those three personalities all the time.
So, in essence, you can cultivate a relationship with God as a father, friend, or king. But, on the other hand, if you only see God as your maker, creator of heaven and earth who has no business building a close relationship with sinful humans, then you have missed the mark.
As a young man who came from an environment full of love, care, and well provided for, l lost my mum when l was eight years old my Dad when l was 14 years old.
I was lost in the world at such tender age, and when l found God, l saw him as Father and friend, and he proved himself nothing short of those qualities and personalities.
Whenever l spoke to God and said these words: “You’re the Father of the fatherless, he listens to me, talks to me, and attends to me speedily. He was trustworthy, my Father and friend, and we never stopped loving each other.
How you see God matters! It does. Until we understand the critical role perception plays, we will never truly understand how to talk to God.
The way we talk to God boils down to our perception of who God is. David said: “The Lord is my shepherd; l shall not want.”Psalm 23:1.
To David, God almighty was his shepherd, leading him on the path of righteousness. Our perception of God will go a long way to determine how we connect with him.
If we see God as a loving father and bosom friend, we will access him with obstruction because our mindset is everything.
Believers who have a healthy perception of God know how to talk to God throughout the day. They have created a way to reverence and flow with him daily and consistently.
2. Walk With God

In Christianity, there’s always this debate about what it means to work for God and walk with God. This is a result of how many Christians have replaced walking with God with working for God.
You look around the church, and then you see lots of Christians who are engaged with lots of activities but are spiritually malnourished because they spend quality time in the house of God but not with God. They spend time in the place but not with the house owner.
The value of admonishing believers on how to talk to God is to get divine direction daily to coordinate things the way God directs you.
What better way to walk with God if you don’t speak with God? Strangers don’t communicate; they are miles apart. So when we find ourselves cut off from God, we find it difficult to talk to him.
Walking with God ensures we keep the communication line well connected to dial heaven’s hotline as we please and get instant feedback.
God appreciates and values our relationship with him; he says: “if we draw near to him, he will draw nearer to us’. That is the kind of God we serve.
He’s our Father and a friend who cares about us and wants to discuss with us; he wants to know about our challenges, struggles, and aspirations. He said; ‘Come to me all ye that are burdened and heavy laden, and l will give you rest.”Matthew 11:28.
How do we then talk to God? Simple! By walking with God. Don’t just work for God; walk with him. That is the difference between a healthy spiritual life and a stagnant spiritual life.
3. The Place Of Prayer

Prayer is the backbone of our Christian faith; we are powerless, hopeless, and helpless without prayer.
We are wired to receive strength, grace, power, abundance, and unction from our maker. Hence, prayer is what makes this connection possible.
Prayer is what brings the dew from heaven, and when we cannot pray, we become stunted, barren, and lose our grace.
Therefore, a serious-minded Christian must understand and know how to speak to God in prayer, for that is the moment God ascends in all its glory to listen to us talk to him.
You can take a look at our previous written article on prayer {PLEASE ADD LINK HERE} to have more comprehensive information on worship.
Hitherto, as Christians, we must know how to talk to God; we must use such knowledge to cultivate a healthy prayer life that draws God nearer to us and us to him.
Jesus is a typical example of how to flourish consistently as a child of God. While on earth and in human form, he performed miracles, overcame the devil in the wilderness, taught revelations, and displayed divine wisdom because we were always talking to God in the place of prayer.
Apostle Paul knew the essence of prayer when he admonished the believers in Thessalonica by saying: “Pray without ceasing.”
Prayer must not cease!
You must never stop going down on your knees to seek the face of God regardless of where you find yourself because when you pray, you are not just observing an activity; instead, you are talking to God.
When last did you talk to God? Prayer change lives, changes destinies, changes situations; prayer gives you divine direction. It’s the way to talk to God and hear him, for, through prayer, we commune with God directly and expressly. Prayer is everything.
Establishing An Altar (A Place Of Prayer)

The place of prayer goes beyond just going down on your knees and saying a few words; we must also understand the revelation behind establishing an altar.
From the Old Testament to the New Testament, we have repeatedly seen how believers created an altar, a significant place of prayer where God almighty and Angels also converge in the course of worship.
An extraordinary Christian builds an altar because they have cultivated a wonderful prayer life with God.
God wrought great things through them because they have first-hand knowledge of divine revelation, divine direction, miracles, and spiritual gifts. It is how to talk to God’s face to face, communing with him regularly on your altar.
There’s immense power when talking to God in a secluded place, strictly created to speak to God. It’s a devotion God respects and honors because it shows you have made God a priority, so also, he will prioritize anything that has to do with you.
A prayer altar is a place where you push and pray until something happens. A prayer altar is a place where you move hands.
Have you ever been to a supermarket where a child is with the Dad? That’s the joy of every supermarket owner.
Even though the Dad is there to buy a few things, the child will pick cereal, chocolate, toy, drinks, etc. At the altar, that’s where you move the hand of God through intercessions, and you see God do great and mighty works.
How can you say you’re the apple of God’s eye when you don’t even talk to God? Laughing out loud. We must see the importance of having an altar as it builds consistency; we need to talk to God daily, and it ensures our spiritual life grows consistently to the level God wants us to be.
I have seen God do great and mighty things at the place of prayer. Therefore, endeavor to keep a prayer altar where God and you converge to talk and discuss how to impact your life, family, and the body of Christ.
4. Live A Holy Life

”It was in the year King Uzziah died that I saw the landlord. He was sitting on a lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the Temple.
Attending him were mighty seraphim, each having six wings. With two wings, they covered their faces; with two, they covered their feet, and with two, they flew. They were calling out to each other”.Isaiah 6:1:2.
“Then l said, “It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and l live among a people of dirty lips. Yet l have seen the king, the Lord Lord of heaven’s armies.
Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. He touched my lips with it and said, “See, this coal has touched your lips. So now your guilt is removed, and your sins are forgiven.”Isaiah 6:5:6.
The prophet Isaiah never knew he could see God in all His glory; he was just a regular believer whose trust was in God. He took his bible to the synagogue on the Sabbath day like others, but on that faithful day, he encountered God, and his life changed.
God purified his lips, heart, and life. He became a voice, a mouthpiece of God. Maybe God wants to use you to do great and mighty things, but he cannot because your lips are filthy like Isaiah.
God will never compromise on holiness, we must decide to live a holy life, and God will give us the grace to attain such height.
We are no longer who we used to be; we are different now; something happened to us when we gave our LordLord to Jesus Christ and accepted him as our LordLord and personal savior.
There was a spiritual regeneration, we were born anew, and God worked a spiritual surgery on our Spirit being.
He dislodged the devil from our hearts and lives, uprooted his foundations, and rebuilt another foundation, building a temple where he dwells inside of us. We are a new creature, the old has gone, and we are Jesus people now, bought with a priceless price.
If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature, old things have passed, and everything has become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17. All God requires from us is to live a holy life, for God cannot dwell in anything unclean.
When we commune with God, we transcend to a different place, a different dimension; we sit side by side and talk like a father, his son, or daughter, but God cannot condone sin, so we must upgrade. We must prioritize God in our lives by keeping ourselves pure; otherwise, we will not enjoy God as our Father.
God cherishes our conversations with him, and he’s proud of you; he makes a mockery of the devil because of you. So, when you live a life that doesn’t glorify God, he hides in shame, for he cannot behold iniquity.
Job was just a man like us; he knew how to talk to God, he lived a holy life, and God was proud of him. God called him blameless! Is God proud of you? Can he call you that? The hunger to talk to God starts with our passion and desire to live a holy life that pleases God.
First, we must abstain from evil and every appearance of sin to have unlimited access to God and discuss with him as a friend would.
One day the members of the heavenly court came to present themselves before the landlord, and the accuser, Satan, came with them.
Then the Lord asked Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the most refined man on all the earth. He is a blameless-a man of complete integrity. He fears God and stays away from evil.
Job 1:6:8.
If our lips are filthy, if our lives entertain anything evil, we cannot talk to God; he won’t hear or listen to us. He is holy, he is blameless, and we must aspire to be blameless just like our heavenly Father.
Therefore, we must ask God to sanctify our lips our hearts and help us live a holy life to talk to him uninterrupted. If God doesn’t talk to his beloved children, who then will he speak to?
Let us live a holy life! A life that glorifies God almighty, a life God will be proud of. You’re a royal priesthood, a holy nation, called forth to live a life that glorifies God.
5. Just Go Ahead And Talk To God

I have seen fear deprive more Christian’s access to God, and it hurts me because many Christians don’t understand their place in God. They don’t know how important they mean to God, resulting from a lack of knowledge.
Nowadays, Christians rather meet a prophet or pastor instead of talking to God. As a result, they are duped or given false prophesy because they fail to realize that they have full authority unrestricted and uninterrupted access to God.
All it takes to talk to God is to speak to him. God is not far away. He is very close to you. We get so anxious; we worry so much, all for nothing. And God is saying call on me, am all ears.
So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. Hebrews 4:16.
God says, “Come.” He says we can boldly come to his presence; we can boldly talk to him. So don’t let fear stop you from talking to your heavenly Father. Your heavenly Father wants to speak to you.
When we refrain from talking to God, we start manifesting signs that show that our faith in him is showing symptoms of spiritual stagnancy because those are signs of fear; those are signs that show our faith is growing cold.
We cannot afford to be hot today, hard tomorrow, because we are only opening the door for the devil to come in. When last did you talk to God? Why wait any further? He is patiently and gladly waiting to hear your lovely voice.
You can now put that smartphone down, go down to your knees, close your eyes and talk to your heavenly Father. He is listening. He hears you loud and clear.
6. Speaking In Tongues

Speaking in tongues is a mystery yet untapped in our spiritual walk with God. Certain believers will only speak in tongues when they feel the presence of God. However, speaking in tongues is not just a spiritual gift but a way to talk to God in tongues only Him understands.
Paul opened forth the eyes of the believers in Corinthians when he not only explored but also exposed the mystery surrounding speaking in tongues as a pathway on how to talk to God.
For if you can speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God since people won’t understand you. You will be saying by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious. 1 Corinthians 14:2.
So, if you’re thinking about how to talk to God, he has given you the gift that enables you to speak to Him expressly without any obstruction. Speak in tongues more; you won’t pray amiss, for God understands you and understands you very well.
7. Have Faith

It will surprise you that people still believe no one can talk to God or hear God speak to people. I used to have this doubt and disbelief as a very young Christian until l could listen to God speak to me directly and feel God touch me, live, and direct.
I still recollect vividly in 2000, when we were having a series of teaching on “life in the Spirit,” discussing the Holy Spirit.
I was on my way to visit a friend, and while taking the route to his house, l heard a voice saying, “He’s not at home, take the field” there was no one there, and there was no smartphone then, and l never had one.
So I heard that voice. So l followed the vote, and to my amazement, l saw him just by the field. Still, in shock over my experience, l spoke to my Sunday school teacher, who told me the Holy Spirit said to me. That was the experience that changed my perspective.
To talk to God as Christians, we must have faith, believe, and be confident that we can create a relationship with God where we can speak to Him and what He says to us.
8. Prayer Journaling

It can be a way of writing down your prayers in a journal and tabling them before God. However, it is different from the conventional way we talk to God in prayers, where we go down on our knees to pray using our words or even speaking in tongues.
Prayer journaling is a formable way to know how to talk to God or communicate with God by writing down our wishes, requests, and prayer points.
God is not restricted to our oral prayers alone; he is omnipotent and omniscient. The all-knowing God, all-powerful who created different languages and knowledge.
Furthermore, prayer journaling gives us a record of testimonies. It keeps us abreast of our long-standing communication with God as we have documentation of all the prayers answered, manifested, and happening in our daily lives. Do you want to talk to God differently? Try prayer journaling, and you will be glad you did.
9. Find A Quiet Place

The majority of the time, if you are looking at sustaining a robust communication flow with God, talking to Him requires you to go to a secluded place where you’re free from the distractions that quickly take you away from His presence.
This place provides you with the etiquette you need to speak to God expressly and listen to Him talk to you about without obstructions.
God is a respecter of no man, but when you make sacrifices and show you’re a lover of God aspire to build a great relationship with God, he will give you all the attention you need.
Jesus always went to a quiet place to spend quality time with the Father. Do likewise, and God will reveal Himself to you unobstructed.
10. Be Humble
It takes humility to see God, talk to Him, and build a relationship with Him. We serve a God who does not associate himself with anything high-minded. Once God sees pride in us, he casts us away from Him, for satisfaction contradicts what God starts for.
The devil is a typical example of what not to be associated with when it comes to talking to God. He became lofty, swollen with pride, and God kicked him out of heaven. Hence, to speak to God, we must take pride from our hearts and lives.
In the beginning, Satan was not always regarded as Satan. He was called Lucifer. He was created beautiful, but he became proud and was cast down from heaven.
So also, when we become proud, God will not listen to us or give us an audience. Hence, to talk to God, we must be humble; we must come before God with a heart of humility, a heart that reverences God in all His glory.
But he gives us even more grace to stand against evil desires. As the scripture says, “God opposes the proud but favors the humble.” James 4:6.
The secret to God’s heart is humility; you must be able and treat others with a sense of humility because God never accommodates the proud, only the humble.
Finally, we can never underestimate the importance of knowing how to talk to God and talking to him daily, which have numerous impacts on our spiritual lives.
Hence, we must aspire to have the right mindset to see God almighty for who he is A loving father, a bosom friend, a great king, and build our relationship with him accordingly.
In our daily lives, we must ensure we walk step by step with God, not just working for him, so we will not only learn to grow but blossom into the fullness God wants us to achieve and attain.
We cannot undermine the importance of walking with God and how talking to God regularly influences such a walk. Hitherto, we must pray, pray, and pray.
A prayer is a spiritual tool that sharpens our relationship with God as we communicate with him daily. I mean daily, not yearly, quarterly or monthly. God is interested in our day-to-day living, and we must prioritize his place in our lives, just like Job.
Also, live a holy life, so when you call on God, he will gladly listen to you and not hide due to sin and ungodly living. Talk to him boldly, and don’t let fear deprive you of connecting with your heavenly Father.
Save this for later!
