Meditation involves a state of relaxing and emptying the mind of different thoughts and imaginations and clearing the mind from things that can cause distractions, and focusing the mind on one particular thing in order to advance in mental or spiritual development.

What Does The Bible Mean By Meditating On The Word?

To meditate on the word means to ponder deeply on the word and to keep speaking it in a soft tune; like soliloquizing when contemplating.

See the command given to Joshua in Joshua 1: 8 “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night…”

The Hebrew word for meditating is “hagah,” which means murmuring in a soft tune, either in pleasure or anger, while contemplating continually and pondering over something.

It is more like soliloquizing when in deep thoughts and ponders. It is said that when in deep thought or when strategizing, the mental exercise process is often accompanied by soft-tune speeches. This process is also known as meditation. To meditate on the word means soliloquizing the word when pondering deeply on it.

It begins with reading the word, and when reading, you pay attention and focus on several keywords, phrases, clauses, scrutinizing and analyzing what you’ve read, considering what you’ve read, identifying with what you’ve read, and then creating a mental picture of what you’ve read by seeing it play in your daily living, until as Colossians 3: 16 says, let the message of Christ dwell in you richly, then use the word of God to pray and commune with God.

It is not a glance through a few verses or chapters of scriptures; it is an act that involves excellent time and patience to effectively engage in, so one may ask, how do I meditate on the word of God day and night?

How do I Meditate On The Word Of God Day And Night?

The command given to Joshua is to meditate on the law day and night. What does it mean? Joshua 1: 8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night…” The Hebrew word translated as meditate here is the word “hagah” which means to study, speak, utter, rehearse, and muse over something internally.

That is to ponder, in the sense of murmuring or uttering a soft speech while contemplating over something that is like soliloquizing.

To meditate on the word of God day and night means to continually study, speak, utter, rehearse, and muse in the sense of uttering a soft speech like soliloquizing and contemplating on the word of God at all times.

It means always to hold firm to the word of God in every season. Good times and bad times, in fear and anguish, when making progress and going through the most challenging times.

When in so much stress that it seems you are losing all your strength, and when in rest and regaining strength, the word of God should always be on our lips.

Stated in this article are 10 ways to meditate on the word of God effectively. These are practical steps that I have tried, and I’m still using, and it is effective in my Christian life.

These 10 ways how to meditate on the word effectively as listed can fused into a daily routine, because they are so practical and they all work hand in hand to yield immense results.

10 Ways To Meditate On The Word Of God Effectively

1.  You Should Have A Quiet Time And Place For Study

When taking steps on how to meditate on the word of God, the first step to take is to set out a particular time and place to have a quiet time for personal Bible study. This can also be the first step to take when one wants to know how to meditate on the word of God for beginners.

In as much as there is no specific time and place where God’s presence is more on a higher concentration, for the sake of discipline, having a routine time and place for personal Bible study is a good custom, as long as there is no sentimental or sort of spiritual value that is attached to it, then it is okay.

Again, the main reason for having a time and place is for the sake of solitude with God. Luke 11: 1 (NIV) says, “One day Jesus was praying in a certain place.

When he finished, one of His disciples said to Him….” In this text, there are two things to be noticed, a particular place and secondly one of his disciples called him.

This proves that he will always withdraw Himself to be alone whenever He wants to commune with God, that’s why there is a certain place and someone had to call Him because they were not all together, but he was separated. \

So having a certain time and place for personal Bible study, to be in solitude to meditate on the word of God, is one of the 10 ways how to meditate on the word of God effectively.

2.  You Must Exercise Great Patient

Patient, they say, is a virtue, and it is one of the 10 ways on how to meditate on the word of God effectively. In this jet age where everything is on a fast move, and there is a rising demand for a short and a quick answer, to meditate on the word of God effectively, you must exercise great patience.

Patience is one of the critical factors when it comes to meditating on the word of God. By exercising patience, we can ponder and think about God’s word.

Exercising patience when meditating on the word of God will trigger you to focus and pay closer attention to the different rudiments in the Biblical text.

You will not just have a glance or flip through passages of scriptures, but you will take out time to ponder on several keywords, phrases, and clauses in the Biblical text. You will gradually scrutinize, taking time and exercising patience when analyzing the Biblical text you’ve read.

Patiently pondering and thinking about what you’ve read till the word of God dwells profoundly and richly in your heart and begins to play out in your daily living, which is the effect of meditating on the word of God.

3.  You Must Clear Your Mind And Keep An Open Mind

One of the first steps involved in studying and understanding scriptures is keeping a transparent and open mind when you approach a text.

This step can also be applied when it comes to meditating on the word of God effectively. To clear and keep an open mind means to let go of any form of distractions or a preconceived understanding of that particular text and to depend on the Holy Spirit to get the proper in-depth knowledge and a new insight into the text.

So keeping a clear and open mind makes you have the word of God to dwell in you richly. Ephesians 3: 19b (NIV) “…that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God”, and Colossians 3: 16a (NIV) Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly… This is the aftereffect of keeping a clear and open mind when meditating on the word of God.

4.  Make Studying And Pondering On The Word Of God A Lifestyle

It takes extra determination and drives to make time to study God’s word and connect with God from time to time daily. One of the ways how to meditate on the word of God effectively is to make studying and pondering on the word of God a lifestyle.

At this stage, it goes beyond just having a daily routine of setting out time and space for solitude to study and meditate on the word of God.

Still, it is more like engraving in your lifestyle to always carefully consider making the word of God to be part of every one of your conversations directly or indirectly, and this can only be possible when you make studying the word of God a lifestyle which goes beyond just a set-out time for a daily or weekly engagement.

Still, a lifestyle, something that, if possible, should even be done on the go. Like I always tell people, as much as I have a set out time and place to continuously study and meditate on the word of God, I equally don’t have a set time and place to look at the word of God.

Thank God for technology, and there is the internet. Today we can access valued information anywhere and anytime with the help of our mobile smartphones.

So I have made it a lifestyle as a believer; instead of constantly spending much time on social media, I’d instead use that little time to study and ponder on God’s word even while on transit.

This has helped to build and enhance my spiritual growth as a believer in Christ. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying going on social media is wrong or bad, not at all. I do go on social media.

But I’m saying instead of making always being on social media a lifestyle, why not reduce your social media time and increase your Bible study and meditation time.

5.  Make The Scriptures Your Daily Devotional

God designed the scriptures to be a daily guide to every believer, to keep in tune with Christ, and when we are in tune with Christ, we are in tune with God and life in general.

So we should start seeing it in that light and hold firm and fast to it tenaciously. It should be what we are devoted to keeping and following all of its precepts.

So the Bible as our daily devotional should not be like every other book or a pamphlet that we flip and glance through to read a thing or two for the day before we go out but should instead go beyond that. It should be what guides us daily. It is what we should depend on and what we are committed to following as our daily guide.

So one of the ways on how to meditate on the word of God effectively is to live a life committed to obeying and keeping the word of God, consistently identifying with the word of God, and at all times, letting the word of God be the number one determining factor in our daily living.

6.  Let The Word Always Guide You

In Psalm 119: 105 (NIV), The Psalmist says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” Let us closely examine this text and draw out the lessons therein.

The Psalmist sees life as a journey, and on this journey there, everywhere is dark. In scriptures, darkness is associated with confusion, chaos, dangers, and negativity.

At the same time, light is associated with illumination, understanding, wisdom, and positivity. Feet mean what is used to take steps, to make a move, and a path is a way to follow.

The word of God being a lamp unto His feet means it is the word of God that illuminates and gives wisdom and understanding to direct his every move. And a light unto my path means it is the direct illuminates his direction so he won’t fall into any form of danger.

As believers in Christ, one of the ways how to meditate on the word of God effectively is to learn from the Psalmist. We should always draw out wisdom and direction from the word of God whenever we are confused.

Whenever we are in a dangerous and chaotic situation, we should always go to the word of God for illumination and wisdom on what to do.

I always tell people (mainly fellow believers) that the word of God gives answers to every question of man and to every condition we can ever find ourselves in today. So making the word of God our daily guide will help us to know how to meditate on the word of God effectively.

7.  We Must Treasure And Value The Word Of God

Treasures are highly valued; hence, they are always reserved and hoarded. Psalm 119: 11 (NIV) “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

Now, we should bear in mind that things that are treasured and that are of great value are the things that are always hidden to secure or hoarded. If we bring it to this context, it implies that we should have great value and treasure the word of God.

And as Jesus says in Matthew 6: 21 (NIV), “For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be.” So one of the ways on how to meditate on the word of God effectively is to treasure and place a high value on the word of God, by this, it means we will always, at all times, channel our heart and mind on the word of God.

Again, Jesus rightly said it in Matthew 6: 21 (NIV) “For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be.” So if we treasure and value the word of God, which will cause our hearts to always be on the word of God, by doing this, we are already meditating on the word of God effectively.

8.  Map Out Scriptures To Study; Possibly Have A Study Guide

To map out scriptures to study or possibly have a study guide is one of the ways to meditate on the word of God effectively.

Although initially, the scriptures were not written in chapters and verses, chapters and verses were introduced around 1560 to aid easy reading, citation, and quotation.

So mapping out scriptures, possible in chapters and verses to study and meditate on, is a very good idea; it can aid easy Bible study. My personal suggestion for a start, begin with John 1.

You can also have a study guide. A study guide is like a book or a pamphlet with different Biblical topics and different scriptural texts addressing them.

And you can pick up an issue and begin to study how they are addressed in the scriptures. For example, let’s say you want to research fasting, and the study guide will take you on a tour of different scriptural texts that address fasting and how it runs through scriptures.

You can also use Bible concordance as a study guide, and Bible concordance is at the back of most good Bible translations today.

9.  Try To Always Recite And Memorize Some Passages Of Scriptures Daily

When we recite and memorize scriptures daily, the degree of improvement in our spiritual life cannot be quantified. But one of the benefits is that it enables us to meditate on the word of God effectively.

If meditation means speaking, uttering, rehearsing, and musing over something, picking out some passages of scriptures to always recite can also help us know how to meditate on the word of God effectively.

Imagine reciting and memorizing just 5 to 10 verses of scriptures daily. You will cover close to or more than 10% of the Bible in a whole year.

So it is not just a suggestion, but it is eminent for us as believers in Christ to always recite and memorize some text of scriptures daily. Several scriptural texts, directly and indirectly, demand us to recite and memorize scriptures daily. Joshua 1: 8; Psalm 119: 11.

10.  Write Down Scriptural Verses On Pronounced Areas Around You

An average Jew in ancient times and up to date will inscribe scriptures on his doorpost and even on bracelets and necklaces.

The reason is that they want to get so much acquainted with scriptures, they want scriptures to be a part of them, and so they will always carry them along with them.

This is also something we can borrow from to use as one of the ways to aid how to meditate on the word of God. You can print out scriptural verses and paste them on pronounced and prominent areas around you.

Maybe verses you intend to memorize or scriptures you are studying and meditating on it. Writing them down on pronounced and prominent areas around you can help keep your focus and also help you easily memorize the scriptural.

Conclusion

All of the different ways on how to meditate on the word of God effectively, as stated, are practical ways that can be fused and engraved into our daily routine.

So my suggestion will be to start at least from number 1  because that step is more like how to meditate on the word of God for beginners. So if we can start with it and continuously practice it daily until all of it entirely becomes a part of our lifestyle.
